Get your Dander Up! Dandelion Wine: Part One

18 May

“If you had your way you’d pass a law to abolish all the little jobs, the little things. But then you’d leave yourself nothing to do between the big jobs and you’d have a devil of a time thinking up things to do so you wouldn’t go crazy. Instead of that, why not let nature show you a few things? Cutting grass and pulling weeds can be a way of life, son.” -from Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Spring! And haven’t we had a lovely one so far? Whenever the weather starts getting warmer like this, I always think of school days, those last afternoons of the year when it seemed like everyone, students and teachers alike, were all just waiting it out until summer vacation. The hallways smelled different, thicker, and it was harder to concentrate with the sounds and smells of someone mowing the lawn coming in from the open windows. And most of all, I think of the day that came every year, the day I got off of the bus and my whole yard had turned yellow with dandelions.

First Anniversary of Thriftfulness!: Sweet Yes Tea Party

14 Apr

Note: Today, my blog is one year old. Happy birthday blog. I made you some springtime sweets. Thanks readers for continuing to read.

When I was a young’n, one of my favorite things to play outside was “Feed the President” with my cousins. I guess we chose him because he was the most important person we could think of, although we might not have actually known who “The President” was. We would walk down to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house and Grandma would give us empty butter tubs and jam jars to prepare our “meals” in. It was always a decadent multi-course affair: grass salad, ditch-water soup, pinecones wrapped in dirty empty candy-wrappers that we found in the woods. We had dead leaves for plates, twigs for silverware, but dessert was the best part because sometimes for dessert, Grandma would make actual food! Blueberries and milk with sugar were my favorite, so tasty that we ate Mr. President’s helping too…

It’s The Great Fall Care Package Charlie Brown!

12 Oct

It’s officially autumn and we Midwesterners love our autumn. More than that, we love getting cozy. Digging out our jackets (and maybe finding a $5 bill or that lost glove in the pocket), snuggling under quilts, and sipping that first cup of warm apple cider. The beauty of the season and the general comfiness of it all, the scarves and the scent of dead leaves and the thick socks, is our consolation prize for the very long and windy winter we’ll have to endure.

This makes for a perfect opportunity to make a cozy fall care package for someone you love. If you’ve got someone in your life who, say, waited all night in a pumpkin patch with you and was subsequently cheated out of her tricks or treats or who came and got you out of that pumpkin patch in the middle of the night and tucked you into your nice warm bed, you probably owe them a little thank you gift. Here are some ideas to help you make one without shelling out too much of that money you found in last year’s autumn jacket:

Cousin Jodie’s Crap Bag

1 Jul

DSC02865

My sweet, rosy cousin, Jodie, six weeks my elder, is always the hit of the family camping trip and it’s not even because of her infectious giggle or her grosser than gross nursing stories. No, it’s because of her Crap Bag.

This may sound like something she brought home from the hospital with her, but I assure you it’s not. Crap Bag is Cousin Jodie’s version of delicious “search n’ scarf” trail mix, made with whatever is lying around in her kitchen cupboards. She has two specialties: Salty Crap Bag and Sweet Crap Bag. Here is her recipe for Sweet Crap Bag:

Easter 09: Adults Need Bunny-Love Too

14 Apr

basket2

At an Easter dinner party this Saturday (which was lovely, thank you), I was given dessert duty. Since I flaked out and picked up a store-bought pie, I decided to give the other adults an easter treat. I bought all of the classic Easter candy which actually turned out to be pretty pricey. I couldn’t justify spending the extra money on that fake plastic grass but at the same time, I just couldn’t make an easter basket without it. My solution? I took the candy packaging and shredded it into the grass. Then I covered the bottom of the basket with some green yarn to give it some oomph and walah!
